Guide to Exploring the Dalmatia Coast | Stamping the Passport

The Dalmatia Coast covers the area in Croatia from Split in the North to Dubrovnik in the South. This stretch of coast is absolutely picture perfect and offers so much to see and do.

So where to start? These are top things to see and do along the Dalmatia Coast.

1. See it from up high.

The coastline is rugged and full of beautiful coves, many islands and crystal-clear water. If you are in Dubrovnik you can take the cable car up to the top of Mt. Srd. Definitely go at sunrise or sunset for an even better view.

2. See it from the sea.

Water adventure tours are huge around this area. Make sure you do your research and find a company that does everything you want to see. In the south of the Dalmatia coast is an area called the Elaphiti Islands. We did a full sea kayak adventure out to these beautiful islands and explored and ate with the locals. It was an unforgettable day.

3. See it by foot.

These towns have so much history both ancient and modern, particularly after the conflict in the early 1990’s. One thing to remember, these coastal towns and villages are built on the coast and directly into the hillsides and there are stairs everywhere. Tip: If you stay in the old town of Dubrovnik in a AirBnb or hostel you won’t have too many to worry about.

4. See it through food.

There are so many incredible local cuisines to eat and check out and if you are anything like us, food is one way we love to experience a new place we visit. These three things you must try: ‘peka’ – meat under the bell, either lamb, veal or octopus which has been slow-cooked for 3 hours. (most places you will have to book ahead though). ‘bӧrek’ – filo pastry filled with minced beef, spinach and cheese. ‘pašticada’ – the Dalmatian beef stew slow-cooked in red-wine for hours. Is your mouth watering yet?

5. See it through the people.

The Croatian people are so kind, generous and want to make sure that you enjoy their country as much as possible. Go on tours with locals, eat in local family-run restaurants called konobas and speak with the locals. So much of our adventure was directed by them and getting them to tell us of places to go and things to do. It is the best way to adventure!
