One of the biggest questions we get asked is how we are able to support ourselves while traveling. It’s taken us a number of years and dabbling in a number of jobs to get to a place where we can fully support ourselves online, but now that we’re able to travel full-time as digital nomads, we thought we would share some of the things we do to make money with YOU to help you create a remote life where you can travel the world at your leisure!
Here are the ways that we make money while traveling:
1. Find Remote Positions
This is one of the best ways to be able to support yourself financially while traveling. Having a business allow you to take a full or part-time role remote gives you the freedom of working from anywhere, while still being able to make money.
Both of us have been able to work remotely for companies in a number of different capacities, and it’s given us the freedom to work from anywhere with wifi, which has really allowed us to travel continuously in a sustainable way.
If you already have a job you love, pitch them on working remotely, even if it’s for a month or half of the year. If you are currently looking for a new job, look for growing start ups, modern businesses, and small businesses using the keywords “remote position”. Remote work is gaining popularity very quickly, and more than ever it is become really easy to find jobs that will allow you to work remotely.
2. Start a Blog / Podcast
Starting a blog or podcast can be a great way to build up an online audience and to begin making money through a new revenue stream. The ways that you can make money off of a blog or podcast are as follows:
- Affiliate links
- Sponsored posts, content or ads
- Sponsored stays or activities (depending on the content)
- Crowdfunding like Patreon
Keep in mind that making money off a blog / podcast will not happen overnight. It takes a lot of time, dedication and consistent effort before it’ll start to pay off.
Although our podcast doesn’t pay enough to support us completely, it’s been one of the most fun things we have done while working remotely!
3. Teach English Online
Working for a company like VIPKID can be great because it allows you to set up your schedule, choose how many hours you work, and make money pretty easily. Of course, with something like this, you do need to be a native English speaker.
Amanda has taught with VIPKID for nearly a year now in a very part-time capacity and it’s allowed her to make extra money quickly and easily to save for things like our trips to Japan and Panama!
If you aren’t a native English speaker, consider teaching your native tongue on a platform like Preply or italki.
4. Do Freelance Work
There are plenty of websites where you can look for freelance work based on your unique skills. UpWork is a popular one and it allows you to bid on different projects in your skillset. You can also reach out to your personal network to see if you know anyone who could use the skills you need for specific projects.
Both of us do freelance podcast production, and Amanda does freelance website design and social media marketing. Freelance work has been great for project based tasks and to help us build up more skills and make more money along the way.
5. Start a Business
It is totally possible to start a business remotely where you can really and truly be your own boss and make your own schedule. Of course, this option is the hardest way to make money and it will probably mean that you need to travel much slower until you get things up and running. In the long-term, however, this could really pay off!
