The Macau Tower Bungy Jump

After jumping off the Kuwarau bridge and successfully doing the Nevis in New Zealand, I made it a goal to one day do the Macau Tower Bungy Jump. Nothing says adrenaline junkie like jumping off the world’s highest bungy jump, right?!

So when our good friends, Josh and Tanis, took a teaching job in Macau, I told myself that I would visit them in Macau to do the bungy jump. We arrived in Macau from Malaysia at the beginning of November, and as soon as I laid eyes on the Macau Tower, I immediately felt terrified. For those of you who don’t know, the Macau Tower bungy is 233 meters. That is f***ing high. I thought the Nevis was terrifying at 134 meters.

Fortunately, I had a couple of weeks in Macau to stare at the tower and imagine myself jumping off of it. I hummed and hawed for a while about it, and finally made my decision after talking with one of my best friends from back home who is currently a full-time teacher with her first child on the way. She said to me, “Amanda, the only thing I regret about my time in Australia is not doing the Whitsunday’s. I didn’t do them at the time because it was going to be really expensive, and looking back, I know I could have made it work. Now, I might never go back to Australia. If you feel like you’ll regret not doing the bungy 5 years from now, you should just do it.”

I knew in that moment that I was going to do it. Five years from now, I would definitely regret it if I didn’t do it.

So I emailed AJ Hackett, and booked my jump. I had 3 days to watch as many YouTube videos of other people jumping as possible, and to psyche myself up. Or completely terrify myself…

Sunday came around and I felt anxious. I had booked my jump for 1pm so that I would have lots of time in the morning to prepare, but the morning flew by, and before I knew it, Ryan and I were in a cab en route to the tower. We arrived at about 12:15pm and made our way to the AJ Hackett counter at the base of the tower. They gave me my ticket and sent me up an elevator to the 61st floor. As we rode the elevator up, my palms were sweaty, and I felt my stomach in nervous knots. I was definitely scared.

The environment when I stepped off the elevator, though, was one of excitement, with fun dance music playing and all of the staff stoked. I took a deep breath and reminded myself that this was going to fun. As I filled out my information and signed my life way via waiver, I was approached by the floor manager, Toad, who assured me I would be absolutely fine and that if he could jump off the tower over 100 times, I could do it once. People call me crazy for having (now) done 3 bungy jumps – this guy has done over 1000 around the world!

I was given a shirt and a harness before they weighed me, and had me sit in the waiting area. Before I knew it, I was out on the platform. There were about 6 people in front of me with 3-4 AJ Hackett staff members running the show, and although the tension in the air was palpable, the staff continued to make jokes and keep everyone smiling.

It took about half an hour before it was my turn, and it wasn’t until the person immediately in front of me jumped that I became really nervous. The AJ Hackett staff ushered me from the right side of the platform to the left, where I sat down to get my feet strapped in. They stuck a GoPro on my wrist and immediately began asking me questions. Next thing I knew, I was standing up and they were strapping my feet into the bungy cord.

I didn’t have much time to process what I was about to do at this point, and within a minute, they were guiding me out to the front of the platform, instructing me to spread my arms like a bird.

5, 4, 3, 2, 1….

They counted down and I jumped, letting out a scream as I began to plummet 233 meters.

My cord tightened and my body began to go back up towards the tower, and as I did so, I reached up to release my legs, righting myself up so that I could take in the views of Macau. My heart was racing, my entire body was filled with adrenaline, and all I could think was “I did it”.

I was slowly released down to the bottom where I was greeted by Josh and Tanis cheering me on, and I don’t think the smile left my face for the next couple of hours.

So was it worth it? 100%. AJ Hackett is a fabulous company with staff who are truly passionate about making your bungy jump a memorable experience, and the jump is much more fun and much less scary than it looks.

I also had the pleasure of jumping in my Praxis swag. Praxis is a 9 month education program with a 3 month bootcamp and 6 month apprenticeship with an awesome start up. Praxis is all about “breaking the mold” and taking your life to new heights (both literally and figuratively). Learn more about Praxis here.
