Most travellers think about taking a sunny Caribbean vacation to get away from the winter co every year. The Caribbean brings up thoughts of white sand beaches, crystal clear water, tropical fruit rum beverages, and sun-drenched days just thinking about it. If you’re planning a trip to the Caribbean, you’re in for a treat. However, it is a diverse corner of the world with a lot to consider. This guide will assist you in avoiding significant rookie Caribbean vacation blunders.
1. Choosing not to eat local food or interact with locals
Even if your resort is all-inclusive, the experience of interacting with locals, sights, sounds, and smells of ordinary life on the islands, may not be included. Feel free to travel off the usual path and wander at your leisure to explore the rich culture around you. Meet some locals and visit fine eateries like Cafe Robin, St Martin to taste some amazing Caribbean flavours. Genuine experiences like these are what makes travelling worthwhile.
2. Assuming everyone is fluent in English
While English is spoken on many Caribbean islands, it isn’t the first language spoken in all of them, as each has its distinct culture. In most places, you can get by with English because many islanders speak it alongside other languages, but other destinations have a higher concentration of Dutch, French, or Spanish speakers. It would be a mistake to assume that everyone in the Caribbean speaks and acts the same way you do, so do your research to ensure you know the local dialect of your Caribbean destination.
3. Not venturing outside the confines of the hotel
Sticking to your resort, especially if you’ve planned an all-inclusive holiday, may seem appealing. After all, everything you need is right at your fingertips, and it’s all for free. You’d be doing yourself (and the region) a disservice if you didn’t go beyond the hotel grounds.
Many seasoned travellers avoid all-inclusive resorts because they believe they don’t provide an authentic destination experience, which is partially true. While an all-inclusive vacation can be a handy and cost-effective way to organize a holiday, if it’s your only exposure to the Caribbean and you don’t mix it up with some non-resort activities, you’ll miss out on a lot of the island’s flavour. Make a conscious effort to venture beyond your hotel’s walls, meet locals, dine at hole-in-the-wall restaurants, and try something new if you want a well-rounded, enriching experience in the Caribbean.
4. Assuming that all islands are identical
It’s easy to lump the Caribbean together as a single destination, but the reality is that no two islands are the same. The dry islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao offer a different experience, as does St. Lucia and the Dominican Republic. Nassau is a world away from the Out Islands, even in archipelagos like the Bahamas. By assuming the islands are identical, you would lose out on experiencing a truly unique travel experience.
Now that you know what not to do on your Caribbean vacation, you are bound to have a splendid and fulfilling time!
