People often ask us what Canadian food is, and since most Canadians originally come from European, our food is a big blend of where the generations before us came from. However, if you’re visiting Canada there are a few must-try food and drinks. Here are some of our favorites:
1.Tim Hortons
This isn’t our favorite coffee shop, but it’s a super Canadian experience to swing by a Timmy’s for a double-double and a donut. You’ll see them in every Canadian town and city, and it’s worth stopping by at least once. Plus, it’s super cheap!
2. Caesars
Caesars are easily one our favorite drinks, and one of the things we miss most when we’re not at home in Canada.
What is a Caesar?
Clamato juice, vodka (or alcohol of your choice, but vodka is best), tobasco sauce, worcestershire sauce, a combination of spices (usually Caesar spice), lime, and some sort of garnish (I prefer the pickled beans).
Most bars and restaurants in Canada will serve Caesars and it’s worth a try!
3. Poutine
Poutine is a French Canadian food that has made it’s way all the way across Canada, and is a staple drunk food for most young Canadians. It’s french fries, gravy and cheese curds, and it’s the best. Seriously, don’t knock it until you try it!
4. Beaver Tails
No, we do not eat beavers in Canada. Beaver tails are fried dough (ie. a slice of heaven) with your choice of toppings. Most Canadians don’t eat these on the regular, but they are one of those things that you have to have once in a while.
We’ve had beaver tails in Vancouver, Banff and Montreal and they have all been equally amazing!
5. Ketchup Chips
It’s sort of weird that other places don’t have ketchup chips. Like, why not? They are so delicious!
When you’re in Canada, make sure you check out the chip isle and try Ketchup and All Dressed Chips. Specifically, we would recommend trying the Old Dutch Ketchup Chips and Ruffled All Dressed Chips. They are both equally delicious and go perfectly with a Caesar on a warm summer day!
