Must Have Travel Apps

A couple of weeks ago, we polled our private Facebook community on travel apps they love. Between the responses we got and the travel apps we already know and love, we came up with a pretty solid list of resources.

If you’re planning a trip, these are the must use travel apps:

AirBnb

Without a doubt, this is one of the apps that we use the most. It’s amazing because you can use it on your phone or your computer and you book places to stay ranging from all different prices with just the click of a button. AirBnb allows you to stay with locals or to book apartments all to yourself. One of the things we love about this is that we can now stay places longer term AND have a kitchen to cook some of our own meals.

Hostelworld

Hostelworld was our go-to booking site for years when we did more backpacking. Hostels have really allowed younger travelers and backpackers on a budget to travel with ease and affordability. One of the things we love most about Hostelworld is that you can see recent reviews from fellow travelers so you know exactly what to expect when you arrive in a new place.

Agoda

Similar to Booking.com, Agoda allows you to choose hotels from across the planet for a more affordable price. We’ve used Agoda a ton over the past 1.5 years and it’s quickly become one of our favorite sites for booking hotels.

Booking.com

Booking.com is similar to Agoda and has great prices on hotels all over the world. This is a great place to get ideas for where to stay and begin budgeting for your trips. It also has reviews of all of the hotels so you can see what other travelers are saying!

Uber

Uber has changed the way we travel. It gives us hassle free trips all over the world and we don’t have to worry about negotiating prices or deal with drivers that might be trying to rip us off. When we arrived in new cities in the past, we would often feel stressed about getting safely to where we were staying, but with Uber, we don’t have to worry!

Uber Eats

Uber Eats is growing in popularity, but it still isn’t everywhere in the world unfortunately. Being in Mexico City, we love having access to Uber Eats. We can get great food delivered to our doorstep for an affordable price and it saves us the hassle of eating out or cooking.

When you sign up, use code eats-amandak3579ue for a discount!

TripIt

TripIt organizes all of your travels. When you have TripIt connected to your email, it will automatically import all of your travel itineraries into the app. It will notify you if your gate changes or if your flight is delayed and remind you of upcoming flights or stays. We used to spend hours rummaging through out inbox looking for flight details or hotel confirmations, and with TripIt, it’s all organized in one place!

Skyscanner

Skyscanner allows you to put in any flight route anywhere in the world and see the most affordable options. Skyscanner is always the first place we go when we’re looking for flight deals or making travel plans.

 xPath

xPath is a travel app that notifies you if you are following a similar route to other travelers. The messaging function allows the you to make contact with other travelers and meet up for a leg of trip, take a train together, go separate your ways and then reconnect. xPath will let you know if someone you’ve previously crossed paths with is in your specific location. Maybe you didn’t know that Dan skiing the mountain today or someone you were on the same flight with is looking for a drinking buddy. Maybe Jennifer has an extra spot in her van and heading south or Dale is a travel blogger looking for followers. xPath promotes you as a travelers and enhances your experience by promoting ONLY local businesses so that you can visit local restaurants, try street food street food, and stay in local places experience the culture of that town or city – #supportlocal

CityMapper

CityMapper finds your location and gives you all of the local transport options in a city. You can also put in your route and it will show you the easiest way to get from point A to point B. The app is available on iPhone and Android and works all over the world!

Maps.me

Maps.me is super handy for those of you who travel without SIM cards or data. You can download the map of the city that you’re in while you’re in wifi and have the map accessible on your phone after you leave a wifi area. This is awesome to make sure that you never get lost!

Google Trips

Google Trips help you to plan your trip in a city. It automatically maps out a half day or a full day with suggestions for things to see and do. If you don’t like the suggestions it gives you, you can tap the “magic wand” and it will give you a different set of options. Each tap of the wand gives you a fresh set of nearby attractions. Google has really made travel so much easier and Google Trips is no different!

Detour

Detour is an app that provides you with guided walking tours right from your phone. It is across the US and in most major international cities. Detour isn’t in Mexico City yet, but we can’t wait to try it the next time we’re in a city that offers it!

Trip Scout

Trip Scout has travel recommendations from locals, so it’s things you won’t find in your average guide book! It’s currently located in 75 major cities across the world, and growing like crazy. They have recommendations for sites, restaurants, places to stay and more. Check out Trip Scout and see if they’re in the next city you’re visiting!

Google Translate

Although we always recommend learning some basics in the native language of a country, it can be hard to get everything you need in foreign languages. And, talk about grocery shopping in a country with a completely different alphabet! Google Translate has really helped us navigate our way through countries with difficult languages and big language barriers.
