There are many reasons why people choose to take holidays to Australia. One of the main reasons is because people get to witness unique and unusual wildlife they wouldn’t be able to see anywhere else. Moreover, they get to witness these animals in their natural habitat, and that is something which is particularly precious. There is nothing quite like seeing an animal at peace in their home.

When you think about wildlife in Australia, you immediately think of the obvious, such as kangaroos. Nevertheless, there is actually a monumental number of different species in the country. There are 450 species of mammals and 300 species of lizards, and you don’t even want to know how many different types of snakes they are! (Close your eyes now… there’s 140 different species of snakes!). And don’t forget all of the fantastic sea life (2180 species of fish), and all of the beautiful birds (750 species), which fly all over the country.
However, we cannot ignore the wildlife Australia has been made famous for. After all, when taking holidays to Australia, you expect to see kangaroos and koalas. The latter is an animal widely associated with Australia. Many people recognize the koala for its simply adorable appearance. What a lot of people don’t realize is that koalas are not actually bears. They are known as marsupials – this is the same category of mammals that kangaroos fall into. You will only find koalas in certain areas of Australia, and you can expect to see them asleep during the day.
And there are of course kangaroos. Kangaroos are well known for their intriguing hop and the fact that they keep their young joeys in their pouch. They are unique animals, to say the least. Intrigue and excitement surround kangaroos, and this has been present since their existent. In fact, the way they got their name says everything. Apparently, when European explorers descended on Australia, they asked an Aborigine what this unusual animal was. The man said “kangaroo” – but little did the explorers actually know that this word meant “I don’t know”.
In addition to this, there are many other animals widely associated with the popular country, which you will get to witness on camping trips especially, like Fraser Island camping trips. Kookaburras hold a special place in Australia. They are widely associated with old folk tales of the past and thus are very much ingrained in Australian culture. You can’t forget about the Platypus, this is one of the most unique looking animals you will ever lay your eyes upon. They have a flat and rubbery appearance – it is unusual, to say the least. In addition to this, you can find the emu, this bird is found all over the whole of Australia. They are extremely strong and fast birds. There are, of course, also the endangered species that are precious and you will be lucky to witness, such as the spotted quoll.
If you are considering taking a trip to Australia and you are an animal fan then you are bound to have an experience you will cherish for a lifetime.
