This week we’ve turned the tables and sit down to be interviewed by Michael Barticel on the “The Good People Effect” Podcast! Michael is planning to move to South America in the next few months, like us feels that he wasn’t built for the traditional corporate career path, and is excited to see what’s out there waiting for him. He asks us some great travel and Digital Nomad related questions that make us go back to the days we started out traveling after graduating university, and we delve into how and when we decided to start the TWW podcast.
On this episode we talk to Michael about a whole lot of things, including how our Spanish is coming along living in Mexico City, the kinds of projects we are currently working on to support ourselves as Digital Nomads, and even have some fun with Michael’s “the Good Stuff” segment, where we answer some pretty tough travel hack questions in under a minute.
Enjoy!
What we talk about in this episode:
- How we met and decided we wanted to travel after graduating from university, our first trip through Asia, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, and how we decided to quit our corporate jobs to build sustainable travel oriented careers
- How we started TWW podcast in 2014, and some of the other projects Amanda and Ryan have undertaken to make money on the road
- The importance of finding friends and a partner that share similar life perspectives, and are able to grow and evolve with you
- Some of the moments that led up to us quitting our jobs and going on our trip to South America, like Amanda’s first trip to Peru and getting stuck in a routine in Canada
- Common fears and concerns that come up before a big trip, how you learn to deal with these better as you travel more, and the good things that come out of facing your fears
- Some of the reasons we decided to start the podcast, and how we liked informal formats
- How having a podcast can sometimes serve as an incentive for people to open up and chat a bit more
- How we are enjoying Mexico City with the food, culture, people and vibe
- How we’ve improved our Spanish, and Michael’s plan to learn as much Spanish as possible before moving to South America in 3 months
- How focusing on enjoyable conversation and appreciating the culture can help accelerate your language learning
- The overwhelming feeling that can sometimes come along with going to a country that speaks a different language, the effectiveness of non-verbal communication, and trusting that you will be able to communicate and be ok in your new locale
- How travel allows you to grow personally and teaches you how to accept things that are beyond your control in unexpected situations – provided you’re in the right mindset
- The accomplishment and added connection you get when you learn those things for yourself through experience, as opposed to someone teaching you in a classroom
- How getting away from your social circle and routine can give you some space to analyze and prioritize what’s actually important to you, and how this can be augmented by talking to other like and different minded people
- How Amanda and Ryan met someone in London that opened their minds on what it meant to “earn a living” and lifestyle
- How we were initially worried when we quit our jobs in not knowing what to expect, but how happy we are that we broke out of our traditional career path
- The importance of trying again if you experience failure, and how it’s not useful to maintain a “What If?” mindset
- Michael’s conversation with a doctor on a previous episode where he was advised that worrying about the past and future can actually cause you to physically age faster!
- Some of the other entrepreneurial endeavours that we are currently working on, like Amanda’s Yoga Business Podcast and Ryan’s contract work for Praxis, an educational startup
- Michael’s idea on how he plans to fund his South American travels, and the plethora of new and exciting remote work opportunities that are now available around the world
- Michael’s segment “The Good Stuff,” a quickfire question round where Amanda and Ryan were only given one minute to respond, including their experience with Ayahuasca in Peru, their top packing tips for long-term travel, opinions on slow vs fast travel, dealing with safety concerns (trust your gut and prepare for the worst!), how to stick to a budget before and during your trip, staying healthy on the road, and Patagonia
- What’s next for TWW, including our plans to stay in Mexico City until May and take in some additional Mexican sights, and going home to Canada for the summer
