Estamos en Mexico City! Although we weren’t quite sure to expect on arriving, our first few days have been great. From our smooth arrival at the airport, our AirBnb exceeding our expectations, indulging in fantastic food, and a great new coworking space, we have really been enjoying ourselves. We’ve had a few (pleasant) surprises, like noticing how organized the traffic seems in comparison to Asia, and finding a great grocery store that is helping to make the city feel like home. We’re trying not to get too comfortable in our space though, and are looking forward to challenging ourselves by exploring the diverse neighbourhoods of the city and primarily interacting with locals in Spanish (however awkward stumbling through conversations in another language may be!)
Although there are a lot of things we are looking forward to experiencing, the reality of the recent earthquake is unavoidable, and can literally become apparent as you walk down the street. While most of the city is recovering or back to normal, we sometimes come across building rubble or flowers which reinforces the intensity of the event and the lives lost. Although we were a little nervous about the potential for another earthquake, we have been able to relax after talking to locals and getting used to our environment. We’re looking forward to sharing our adventures in this great city going forward as we get settled in.
Enjoy!
What we talk about in this episode:
- How we felt before arriving at the Mexico City airport, and how our first few hours in the city exceeded our initial expectations
- Our awesome experience with our AirBnb being in a great neighbourhood and secure building
- Our first dinner in the city, complete with tequila and grasshopper guacamole
- How our first few hours exceeding expectations compared with some of our experiences in Asia, like Taipei where our first impressions of the city weren’t all that great
- The things that have surprised us in the city, like how organized traffic is, how dominant Spanish seems to be (even in tourist areas) and being able to find a great grocery store with many of our comforts from home!
- How it’s been fun and challenging interacting with people primarily in Spanish, which is one of the reasons we chose to travel to Mexico City, and how successful interactions can lead to a sense of accomplishment
- How we got lucky and were able to avoid cash withdrawal fees by finding our bank from home operates in Mexico
- Some of the things we are looking forward to coming up, like the concert we planned our trip dates around, exploring the diversity of the city, getting comfortable with our new neighbourhood and lifestyle, practicing our Spanish, and traveling to other Mexican destinations
- Our experience being in Mexico City soon after the major earthquake, and how although most of the city is recovering or back to normal, we occasionally see some of the aftermath which reinforces the intensity of what took place
- How it can feel strange to be in the city enjoying ourselves knowing that this event took place such a short time ago and that people lost their lives
- How we were initially a little nervous about another potential earthquake, but gradually felt more comfortable as we settled in and talked to locals, who are more or less unfazed by earthquakes as they are common occurrences
- Our awesome new co-working space with WeWork
